Obituary

Ricky A. Thompson, 63, passed away at home with family by his side on Friday, August 28, 2020. He was born April 12, 1957 in Janesville, son of the late Verland “Bub” and Betty (Evans) Thompson.
On October 13, 2012, Ricky married the love of his life Tammi Brown DuPree at Luther Valley Church.
Ricky had many interests in his life which he enjoyed and they include bowling, golfing, gambling, cheering on the Packers and Badgers, hunting, and fishing either in the natural waterways or from a pier on the Gulf of Mexico. His love for his family was felt by his wife, children, grandkids, siblings, and his cats and dogs. One moment of great pride for Ricky was when he was able to buy Tammi her first brand new car.
Ricky was a bus driver for the City of Janesville and with that came his amazing knack to be able to talk to anyone and everyone he met and with his talks you always knew where he stood on things and he was always honest and blunt with you; everything was black and white never grey. He was also a very proud man who made sure he always provided for his family.
He is survived by his love Tammi; sons Eric (Ann) Thompson, Greg Thompson, and Steve Thompson; step children: Amanda (Matt) Mortimer, Sarah DuPree, and Ahlia DuPree; grandchildren: Diana, Chloe, Quin, Zack, and Marissa; great grandson Chevy; siblings: Nancy Loback, Verlinda (John) Weber, Vickie (Raymond) Welsh, and Janice (Robert) Maly; and aunts, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Larry Loback.
Ricky will have a private funeral service with his family and friends on Wednesday with the Whitcomb-Lynch Funeral Home. This wish was considered due to the ongoing COVID state. He will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery. Please visit www.whitcomb-lynch.com for condolences to the family.
Ricky’s family would graciously like to thank Agrace Hospice, family friend Cheryl Hanson, his sisters: Nancy, Verlinda, Vickie and Janice, and his kids; your time no matter in person or on the phone or any other communication was truly appreciated.

I am saddened by Rick’s passing. I wish I could have been with everyone to honor my cousin but time and distance made it all but impossible. Sending condolences to his wife, Tammy, her family and to his sisters and their families. He will be missed by so many.

Rick was not only good at playing a prank on someone else, he was a great sport taking a prank! When Rick and I were part timers at JTS we were both walking out to our buses, which were idling on the hill. As Rick walked around the back of his bus for the inspection "walk around," I slipped onto his bus and into the driver's seat. When I saw Rick walking up the driver side of the bus I eased off the brake and let it roll down the hill. I had no idea Rick was so fast! I stopped the bus when he reached the driver's window. With one hand leaning against the bus and the other over his heart I thought I may have gone too far! Rick was such a great sport! I think he loved telling that story more than I did!
I think what I most admired about Rick was his ability to connect with people. Rick could joke around but he also had a gift for going deeper with people. Great memories! I'm richer for having known Ricky Thompson.

My most deepest sympathy to Rick's family. I was shocked and saddened to hear about Ricks passing. He was such a great friend and like a brother to me. We worked together for 20 years at Erickson's Textiles and he loved a practical joke. He once dressed up in a nightgown and chased Jeff around the break room to give Jeff a hug and kiss for his birthday. We lost touch over the years but every time I saw him around town, he had a warm hug ready for me. I wish that we had kept in touch, I miss his smiling face. RIP Rick.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ricky was like a uncle too me. He was my neighbor growing up, I was able to talk to him about everything. He was a amazing man. He saved my dad 2 times from passing. I remember one time I called him to tell him while my mom was on the phone with 911. I didnt even have a chance to say anymore than help dads unconscious and he was there getting my dad to the floor and gave him CPR. He would do anything for anyone. He will be deeply missed.
